The Higher Education Commission (HEC) of Pakistan has officially opened calls for the HEC Research Awards 2026–27. Designed to honor scholarly excellence, celebrate contributions to intellectual development, and encourage high-impact publications, these awards represent one of the country’s most prestigious institutional honors for faculty members, independent scholars, and emerging researchers.
If you are planning to submit your nomination or put forward your best scholarly work, here is a breakdown of the award categories, specific eligibility conditions, and application procedures.
Award Categories
The HEC Research Awards 2026–27 competition recognizes contributions across three core categories:
- Best Researcher: Celebrating senior scholars who demonstrate cumulative impact, enduring dedication, and substantial intellectual contributions to their field.
- Best Young Researcher: Recognizing early-career researchers demonstrating high productivity and original scientific output.
- Best Publication: Honoring groundbreaking scholarly books and high-impact peer-reviewed journal articles.
General Eligibility Rules
Before applying under any specific category, applicants must meet the following mandatory baseline criteria:
- No Blacklisting: The applicant must never have been blacklisted by HEC.
- No Repeat Winners: Neither the applicant nor the submitted publication may have received the same HEC award earlier.
- Strict Academic Integrity: None of the publications credited to the applicant/authors may be plagiarized, in strict accordance with the official HEC Plagiarism Policy.
Specific Criteria by Category
A. Best Researcher
- Residency Requirement: The applicant must have been a resident of Pakistan for at least three years as of January 01, 2026.
B. Best Young Researcher
- Age Limit: The candidate must be under 40 years of age on January 01, 2026. Residency Requirement: The candidate must have resided in Pakistan for at least one year as of January 01, 2026.
C. Best Publication (Books & Journal Articles)
For a scholarly work to qualify for the Best Publication award, it must satisfy all of the following requirements:
- Type of Work: Must be an original scholarly book or a journal research article.
- Recency: The work must not be more than three years old before January 01, 2026. Author Limit: Must be written by no more than three authors.
- Author Residency: Every author on the work must have been a resident of Pakistan for at least three years as of January 01, 2026.
- Journal Tier (For Articles): The article must be published in an HEC-recognized “W-category” journal (the highest tier under the HEC Journal Recognition System).
- Citation Threshold (For Articles): The article must have accumulated a minimum citation count of 100 citations.
- Publisher Requirement (For Books): Books must be published by a recognized, renowned academic publishing press.
- No Resubmissions: Any publication (including extended versions of a previously submitted paper) submitted in earlier cycles for this same category is ineligible for resubmission.
How to Apply
All nominations must be filed digitally through the official HEC Research Portal:
- Log in or create an account at research.hec.gov.pk.
- Navigate to the HEC Research Awards (HRA) module and select the desired award category.
- Complete the online forms, upload your supporting documentation (proof of residency, publication PDFs, citation metrics, and publisher details), and submit.
Application Deadline: Saturday, October 31, 2026
